President Clinton To Visit U.S Virgin Island and Dominica
The Clinton Foundation is continuing their help within the countries that were affected during the hurricane season, there will be meetings held in various areas such as New York, Dominica and the U.S Virgin Islands, to communicate effective ways of rebuilding the cities and assist the schooling and medical aspects of the Islands. How will their projects affect the current residence that reside on the Islands? There are already issues with Robert De Niro and the resort that he is currently trying to build in Barbuda. The citizens believe that because of this devastating event that took place; they are being exploited. There was a communal land ownership law that protected the citizens and made it possible for them to keep their land. Now with the new development taking place and rebuilding of the city many fear that they will lose their lands that they own and will not be able to rebuild their homes. There were so many people that lost a great deal during the hurricane season, mainly those in the Caribbean countries. After everything is said and done, many of these Islands are still not fully back up and running even with help from numerous places and people. Now that the Clinton foundation is putting themselves in the mix to aide those in need; will it lend aide to those in need of assistance and reopen job markets and opportunities for the people or will it affect them in a negative way?
Visit will highlight ongoing efforts to continue building back in the wake of last year’s hurricane season
New York, NY – On Monday, February 5 and Tuesday, February 6, at the invitation of local leaders, President Bill Clinton will travel to the U.S. Virgin Islands and Dominica to visit communities that were impacted by two devastating Category 5 hurricanes last year. The visit includes sites that are receiving assistance through the work of the Clinton Foundation and its partners, and follows an announcement that the Clinton Foundation will be launching a new Action Network on Post-Disaster Recovery.
In the U.S. Virgin Islands on Monday, on the island of St. Thomas, President Clinton will visit My Brother’s Workshop, a local nonprofit organization that provides mentoring and job training and placement to at-risk youth. My Brother’s Workshop received assistance from the One America Appeal through the Community Foundation of the Virgin Islands. From there, President Clinton will join Governor Mapp and Congresswoman Plaskett at the Schneider Regional Medical Center, where he will see the damage caused by the storms and donate medical supplies provided by long-time Clinton Foundation partner Direct Relief. President Clinton will then travel to the island of St. John, where he will visit the only public school on the island, the Julius E. Sprauve School, which was badly damaged. President Clinton will tour the school and meet with students, staff, and community leaders – helping to guide commitments being made to support recovery efforts in the education sector through the Clinton Foundation’s Action Network on Post-Disaster Recovery.
In Dominica on Tuesday, President Clinton will meet with President Savarin, Prime Minister Skerrit, as well as Cabinet Ministers to learn what progress has been made since the hurricanes, including efforts to develop climate-resilient infrastructure. Following the meetings, President Clinton will visit Pichelin village, a community that was devastated by Hurricane Maria, to meet residents and hear how the storm has affected them and what relief needs remain. President Clinton will then visit the Soufriere Primary School, where he will meet students and teachers.
Through these visits, President Clinton will see the impact of the hurricanes and their current needs for recovery and rebuilding, which will help guide in the creation of partnerships and commitments for the Action Network on Post-Disaster Recovery. These visits follow a trip to Puerto Rico in November of last year, when President Clinton visited communities that were impacted by Hurricanes Maria and Irma, assessing progress of the work of the Clinton Foundation and its partners to deliver emergency medical supplies and solar energy resources.
In addition, responding to urgent, widespread need in the midst of a catastrophic hurricane season, President Clinton joined with the other four living former American presidents to issue the “One America Appeal” to ask their fellow citizens and friends around the world to support the staggering recovery needs.
These efforts continue President Clinton’s longstanding role of helping marshal resources to respond to natural disasters, including after the Indian Ocean tsunami in 2004, Hurricane Katrina in 2005, Hurricane Ike in 2008, and Haiti’s devastating earthquake in 2010.
